Jefferson County Public Schools - School Wishes
Hello, I'm Al Jung with Jefferson County Public Schools and I'm asking for your help in getting the word out regarding the launching of a new JCPS initiative called School Wishes.
The School Wishes initiative connects community resources with the schools that need them.
A pilot study of the School Wishes initiative was run in 11 schools during May of 2004 with very encouraging results. The full initiative launches on September 15, 2004 and spans 80+ schools in the Jefferson County Public School system.
As part of the initiative, educators throughout the district post online wishes for classroom supplies, books, furniture, technology and extracurricular items. Parents, civic groups, and corporations can directly impact the quality of education in our community by granting a wish.
Those with useful unneeded items are also encouraged to make them available to a classroom in need. As an example, after completing a project, a recent donor had an extra gallon of Lizzie McGuire hot pink paint and made it available through the JCPS School Wishes website. It was quickly claimed by Tammie Vest from Roosevelt-Perry Elementary School.
While many of the wishes require donors to purchase an item, there are also many that can be found in the back of closets. (old shirts to be used as art smocks, yarn, paper printed on only one side, VCR's, Camcorders, fish tanks, golf clubs - You name it and our teachers are inventive enough to use it!)
As with any new initiative, it's necessary to spread the word throughout the community. If you could aid us in that effort, perhaps by including a blurb in your newsletter, emailing your employees, posting our flyer on your bulletin boards, informing your volunteer organization, placing a School Wishes link on your web site, or mentioning School Wishes in your meetings, we're confident it will play a big part in making School Wishes a huge success.
